Music-Inspired Clip Board by Candice Windham

Music-Inspired Clip Board
Designed by Candice Windham

Being the wife of a musician comes with some unusual requirements. Most are fine, but some are not sohot, like chasing down the set list when it blows away during an outdoor gig.

The set list is very important because it makes the show run more smoothly when they don’t have to have a discussion about what song to play next. It is placed on the stage floor in front of the musicians, hopefully out of view of the audience. I am getting too old to chase blowing sheets of paper, so I came up with a solution other than putting a rock on it.

This clipboard is not only a way to hold the papers down, but also a little record of their history, featuring photos of their CD covers as well as my favorite band portrait. I used the KellyCraft™ Get-it-Straight™ Laser Square and Multi-Mat™ Docking Station to put it together quickly, easily and aligned.

Here’s how I did it.

Supplies:

KellyCraft™ Get-it-Straight™ Laser Square and Multi-Mat™ Docking Station
Printed cardstock, 12” x12”, or roll of music scale print paper
Spay Adhesive (3M)
Printed cardstock, assorted print, 8 ½” x11”, three sheets
Assorted trims
Clipboard
Computer and printer
Spray paint, brown (Krylon)

Dye ink pad, Mudslide  (ColorBox)
Sponge
Craft Knife
Swirl Stamp (Hero Arts)
Additional embellishments as desired

Instructions:
Spray entire clipboard, front, back and all edges, with spray paint.
Cut two pieces of music scale cardstock or paper a little larger than the clipboard. Coat the backs with spray adhesive. Raise the clamp and slide the cardstock as far under the clamp as possible. Smooth the cardstock down, then flip the board over and use the craft knife to trim the paper closely against the edge. Use small strips of leftover cardstock to fill in around the clamp. Repeat on the back. To patch, align music scale on the KellyCraft Get-it-Straight Laser Square and Multi-Mat Docking Station. Draw a pencil line to line up the patch on the scale.
Tip: I placed the music scales at an angle to add interest. It required some piecing, but the KellyCraft Get-It-Straight Laser Square and Multi-mat Docking Station made it simple.

Stamp the swirl stamp several times with brown dye ink. Repeat on back. Sponge all edges with brown ink.

Set the type (Set List and the band name) and print it out on one of the small sheets of printed cardstock. Trim Set List to 11” x 1 ¼” . Sponge the edges with brown ink.
Place the clipboard face up on the KellyCraft Get-it-Straight Laser Square and Multi-Mat Docking Station, turning it so the board clamp is to the right aligned with the lines in the KellyCraft Multi Mat Docking Station (or clamp to the left and the top and lower edge are against the square). Adhere the Set List strip with double-stick tape strip along the left side of the clipboard, about 1/8” from the edge.
Use the remaining 8 ½” x 11”printed cardstock to create layers 1/8” larger all around than the small photos and ¼” larger all around than the large photo. Sponge all edges with brown ink. Align and mount the photos to the layers using the Kellycraft Get-it-Straight Laser Square and Multi-Mat Docking Station.

Turn the clipboard so that the board clamp faces the bottom of the KellyCraft Get-it-Straight Laser Square and Multi-Mat Docking Station. Align the largest photo about 2” from the bottom of the clipboard and adhere to the clipboard with double-stick tape. Place the smaller photos angled around the large photo. Use the KellyCraft Get-it-Straight Laser Square and Multi-Mat Docking Station to align the outer lower corners of the photos on each side at the top. Note: These photos are not upside down. This is the way I placed the clipboard on the KellyCraft Get-it-Straight Laser Square and Multi-Mat Docking Station to keep the clamp out of the way.

Add ribbon trims to the top and bottom of the clipboard (the bottom one will need to be aligned using the KellyCraft Get-it-Straight Laser Square and Multi-Mat Docking Station).
Tie three 18”strips of trim to the hole in the clamp using a lark’s head knot. Add additional embellishments as desired to the clamp.
Add the band name to the back of the clipboard to add interest and give more personalization.
This clipboard will be used for the first time at an indoor venue on March 28th, which is a benefit for Concord Academy in Memphis, Tennessee. I hope it will be used many more times over the years. I only wish I had thought of this when the members of Sorghum Hill began playing together more than ten years ago. Since they play a lot more outdoor events, this would have saved me a lot of running!
